Nothing breaks the ice like a professional close-up magician. Many have thought that Chris’s frontier miracles and “street magician” are the same. No, that is not true. Sawing a beautiful stage assistant into half and pulling rabbits out of the hat, that is just not Chris’s. He performs not only illusion of the eye but the mind. My Stage Is Your Mind

Mentalism can do more than just mind reading, prediction, mind control, mental erasing, and metal bending. There is no limitation to what our mind can do; it is only limited by one’s imagination.

Below are some of my mentalism signature effects:

Snowstorm -This is a signature stage opening effect requested by many of my clients. Upon telling a short, touching story of snowflakes and winter, paper snowflakes are instantly turned into snow that will fill the entire stage. An excellent opening for annual dinner and Christmas themed events.

Frozen Fork – Just when you think you had a forking good time as I bend and twist the fork with my mind, don’t blink! Watch closely as the fork visually freezes right in front of your eyes!

Ice Card – A spectator will first place a randomly chosen and signed card on my hand. With a little concentration, the card magically appears in an ice cube.

Frozen Water - A bottle filled with water visually freezes in the spectator's hand.

Ice Snow - Not only can I turn water into ice, I can also turn ice into snow. All in the spectators hand.

The above tricks and effects are just a small selection of my favourite magic effects, but there are many, many more. I've never actually counted how many I’m able to perform as there are probably just too many. However, each of the tricks in my repertoire is guaranteed to blow your mind away and leave a deep impression that you will never forget.

Over the years of practicing and playing with different magical concepts and ideas, my knowledge can be used to create the type of magic that you would like to experience! If you would like me to tailor my act to suit your requirements, just let me know and I’ll do my best to help.

Just like any performance art, it takes many years and hundreds of hours of performance and practice to get really good at close up magic. However, the real secrets of good performance are not as readily available as those of, for example, playing the piano.

Although there is some exceptional instructional material available on the market, there is still more of very poor quality. Often the material is insufficiently road-tested and not even produced by magicians who work in the real world for real people. It's very easy for the dedicated student to waste countless hours following dead ends.

My magic courses aims to establish correct principals from the outset and build firm foundations for the successful performance of our craft. His lessons are suitable for beginners.

Close Up Magic

The term 'Close Up Magic' describes just that, a magician who performs magic at really close quarters, often within inches of the audience's eyes, as apposed to the David Copperfield or Siegfried and Roy style of 'stage' magic where the audience is a long way away, and the magic is performed behind dazzling stage lighting.

Close up magic is very intimate and is an interactive experience between the magician and his audience.

Because it is so close, the apparent 'miracles' performed by a close up magician leave the audience gasping in amazement. It is a performance that really does have to be seen to be believed!

I can do some truly amazing things with bank notes.Borrowed bank notes,no magic shop props here! Right in front of your eyes, you will witness the impossible! I will visibly transform your bank note to one of a different value, or into one of a different currency or even split a RM10 note into 2 RM5 notes or a RM20 to Rm10's.

I can even tear one up have you examine it and then restore it. All this, right in front of your eyes!

Playing Cards

Signed cards, shuffled into the pack, will appear in all sorts of mind-boggling places - in a wallet that you were holding, in my mouth, under spectator watch, on the ceiling, the other side of a glass window, and even folded up neatly in my shoe!

In other effects, cards visually transform to other cards, poker and cheating demonstrations, mind reading with cards, you name it, I can do it with a pack of cards.

One of my personal favourites is where, as a hole punched into your signed card moves around the card and then jumps to another card

What is Gospel Magic?

Gospel Magic is not, in any way, shape, or form, involvement with or in supernatural arts. The Scripture clearly forbids activity that falls into the categories of enchantments, sorceries, witchcraft, and anything associated with that which could be termed occult. Gospel Magicians are individuals who are committed to living in obedience to the Word of God and under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. They have no secret powers and have no interest in anything that would suggest metaphysical transcendental ability. They are specialists in the use of unique object lessons, accomplished by totally natural means, that confound the eyes, yet illustrate truth.

Gospel Magicians are much like those in the movie industry who produce special effects for films and television. They offer an audience amazement, wonder, entertainment, mystery and surprise for the eyes. The difference between Gospel Magicians and those in the movie industry is, rather than using electronics and sophisticated scientific gadgetry, Gospel Magicians rely on the skill of their hands, unusual mechanical devices, principles of color blending and light reflection, plus a lot of audience psychology and showmanship to create puzzling and exceptional events.

It is unfortunate that the term "magic" causes so much confusion to a large number of modern Christians. It is not uncommon for believers to assume, since someone is a magician, that he or she must be dabbling with the demonic world. (Evangelists have been known to claim that David Copperfield conducts séances before his shows to achieve the power of levitation.) Such an assumption is ignorant and terribly false. Even non Christian people, who do magic tricks, are not in league with evil powers. They simply have an interest that has led them to learn principles, from God's created world, that cause wonder and mystery in a theatrical or "show" type of setting. These principles have to do with sleight of hand, tricky apparatus, strange contraptions, and the clever use of physics and science. They have nothing to do with enchantments or phantom interventions.

To avoid the confusion caused by the term "magic," it is not unusual for present day Gospel Magicians to refer to themselves as "Christian Illusionists." They have found that it is better to call their effects mystery object lessons, amazing illustrations, or even simply refer to them as "illusions," than it is to call them magic tricks. This does seem to be a better choice of terms. Since most people learn about optical illusions while yet in grade school, they tend to view the term "illusionist" as being quite innocent, while the term "magician" arouses suspicions. Since many people are familiar with mystery stories, they aren't bothered by something that is presented as a mental challenge, but if the same thing was called conjuring, they would be spooked by the demonstration.

(It is interesting to note that European people seem to find no problem with the use of the word conjurer, whereas American congregations get quite upset by it.)

In the past, since many dishonest individuals sought to use principles of optical illusion and science to give others the impression that they had true supernatural powers (see Acts 8:9 24 and the story of Simon), old dictionaries often lump magicians into the same category as necromancers, sorcerers, and those who use incantations. Since Christians often turn to dictionaries to prove their interpretations or establish the meanings of terms, this tends to aggravate the confusion among God's people about the meaning of "magic." (It is a matter of wisdom to remember that dictionaries are not divinely inspired, nor do they always reflect local perceptions about terminology. It is especially prudent to remember that, over time, word meanings change. Therefore, when dictionaries are consulted, they should be up to date versions.)

It is vital to turn to modem resources when seeking to understand the term "magic." An ignorant society finds a demon under every bush. An educated society, while still believing in the reality of demonic powers, knows it is good to check first for natural explanations to phenomenal events.

Recent and better definitions of magic and magicians offer a distinction between those who claim mystical abilities, and those who are performers of unusual and fantastic visual effects. Some recent definitions of magic almost totally disregard the old idea of magicians being people of preternatural achievements.

The 1986 version of the Funk and Wagnalls New Encyclopedia says this, "Magic is the art of entertaining with tricks that are in apparent violation of natural law. The principles of deception that magicians use are psychological; the methods are manipulative and mechanical. The psychological principles are misdirection, suggestion, imitation, and concealment. The spectators do not see everything that happens, and they believe they see things that do not happen. Such faulty perception leads to false assumptions, fallacious logic, and, in the end, to the conclusion that the performer has achieved an impossible result."

Key terms in that explanation are apparent and faulty perception. A magician is doing normal things in a manner that makes them seem to be something other than normal. As a form of entertainment, he is playing tricks with the regular process of human reasoning. This is a legitimate thing to do, as long as he clearly lets his audience know that he is creating amazing effects for them to enjoy. If he instead tries to convince his audience that he really does have secret or mystical powers, he is a deceiver. There is nothing wrong with letting people know they are going to witness a "pretend" situation. There is much wrong with someone pretending to have contacts with the spirit world, or attempting to lead audiences into believing that things are real miracles, when they are only tricks.

Gospel Magicians are honest individuals who tell those watching them that what is being witnessed is only an act. They make it clear that it is a type of show, offered for the entertainment and education of those who see it.

So what is Gospel Magic? It is the use of human knowledge and skill to create actual illusions and baffling events that serve to attract people to situations where they will hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The illusions and amazing events also are used as visual aids to assist listeners in the comprehension of spiritual truth.

To state the matter very simply, Gospel Magic is the use of a unique performance skill to bring people into contact with the message of salvation and abundant life that is available through Jesus Christ. Gospel Magic is very effective as a tool for teaching and evangelism. It does attract unbelievers to places where the truth is proclaimed, and it does make for some tremendously meaningful object lessons.

“Hustler” is a word that magicians use to term people who are born not to enjoy the art of magic. Hustlers are people who just want to destroy magic and expose them. They simply do not accept the fact that magic is entertainment. They automatically switched to “fool” mode whenever a magician approaches them with good intention to entertain.

They say, “Alright, I would like to see a trick or two. Let’s see how good you are.” but in their mind they are saying, “Screw you, you think you can fool me. I don’t believe in magic.” They fold their arms and watch the magician perform, and then the famous line comes out from their mouth,

“Ah, I know how that is done. What you did was… It is an easy trick.”

Magicians have little respect for such people. Hustlers destroy the magic for people who are entertained by it.
They walk around with a big ego saying, “I know everything. I won’t be fooled by magic. I am not stupid.” However, all the blame does not go to the hustlers. Maybe what caused them to act such a way is that they have experienced some magicians who poked fun at them and made them feel stupid. So part of the blame goes to those magicians who do not truly understand the art of magic.

What is the point of a magicians?

What’s the point of a magician? He comes on, he fools you, you feel stupid, show’s over. – Jerry Seinfeld.

When you see magic, you will laugh, you will smile, you will be amazed, you will be moved and you may even shed a tear or two. But you will never see tricks. Magicians who truly understand the core and foundation of the art of magic will never seek to fool the audience. They will treat their audience with a sense of respect and value and never will they desire to poke corny jokes at their audience.

True magicians will have one common goal in mind and heart, that is to entertain their audience and giving them a magical moment which they will appreciate and remember the rest of their life. The entertainer would never desire to make his audience feel cheated and stupid.

The magician who shows tricks and fools his audience is no magician but merely a trickster and charlatan.

So Jerry Seinfeld, you are so wrong.

The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science. –Albert Einstein.

The art of magic has long existed when people started to find that they could do something that seems to go against the law of nature. No one knows when the first magic trick was ever created.

Magic is doing something that seems to contradict all laws of nature, going against gravity and defying the laws of physics. Venturing into the world of impossibilities, the magician brings along his audience for a short period of entertainment and bewilderment and for a moment causing them to forget about everything that makes sense.

Magic is an art that has been amusing people for centuries and bringing everyone back to experiencing childhood wonder. It has been used to bring happiness and joy to those who are down. It has been used in orphanages to put a smile on the children’s faces and telling them that the impossible can happen if they believe so and encouraging them to change their lives. Magic has been used in hospitals to entertain patients and to bring them out of their misery, giving them a few moment of joy. It is an entertainment art that knows no racial, geographic or language barriers.

The moment we experience magic, we are instantly children again. For a fleeting moment – after the magic happens and before logic sets in – the world is boundless and anything is possible. Only magic can do that.

As Albert Einstein places it, the mysterious is the most beautiful experience we can have. The sense of wonderment created by the magician leaves the audience with an emotional feeling. That is a fundamental emotion which can be created with true art and science – magic.

Performances Question:

1) I have over 300 guests coming, will you be able to cope with that many?

I can do more.

I'm asked regularly to perform at very large corporate events and have built up an impressive list of fellow magicians, all of outstanding ability, whom I can call upon. It means I can provide entertainment for up to 1,000 guests or more.

2) Do you do any children's magic?

Unfortunately not, I specialise in adult close up sleight of hand magic, all with an adult theme, with adult humour. I've spend years perfecting this type of act and find that with the younger age group, it just goes straight over their heads, they respond much better to a different kind of magic act. Generally i prefer to keep it over about 16/17 years old.

If you are looking for a children's entertainer, please do let me know, I have many magician friends who either specialise purely in children's magic or who perform for both children's and adult parties. I would be more than happy to recommend one of them either in your area or close to it.

3) How far in advance do we have to book?

Please inform and confirm bookings at least 1 week before the shows.

4) Can we see you perform in advance?

If you are in the Petaling Jaya or Kuala Lumpur area, I would be more than happy to meet up for a chat to discuss your requirements and give you a short demonstration.

5) I have foreign guests.Some of my guests are deaf.There will be a lot of background noise.....Can you cope?

I am one of the only two magician in the whole of Malaysia that holds a resident magician position in the clubbing scene. Working with background noises is not new to me.

Magic is a very visual form of entertainment and I've learnt to pretty much mime my whole act if needs be. By using simple visual communication techniques and a few simple mime techniques, not a word need be spoken throughout the whole act. Even some of the jokes are completely understood in this visual medium.

7) Are you willing to perform abroad?

Absolutely! I love to travel and have performed my magic all over the world, for all races, religions and walks of life!

8) What happens if you can't make my event due to illness or unforeseen circumstances?

Fortunately occasions like this are very rare.

If, however, something happens to me on the way to you or just before, i will find a suitable replacement. I know good magicians all over the country and should be able to find one available in the area and “ cash in” a favour or two, even if I end up paying far more to get him there than you are paying me.

If something happens in advance, like injury or serious illness, I will contact you at the earliest opportunity and discuss the situation with you. If it's ok with you I will find you a suitable replacement of equal ability and experience to me.

Christopher Cheong (Zhang Jie Qi)

is a mentalist/magician currently residing in the Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.

His interest in magic started off during his early childhood days. It happened when his family took him for a few magic shows. On his 8th year old birthday, his family bought him a magic kit set from Toys ‘R Us and that is where his foundation was set upon.

A few years after the vested interest has been instilled in his life, coincidence brought a group of magicians to his school and performed a few magic tricks that left a mark on his life like no other. Seeing magic happen before his very eyes further inspired him to learn the tricks of the trade and to improve as a better magician.

AND that was only the beginning,

late in 2007; Chris Cheong joined The Magic Annexe (Malaysia Premier Magic Club). This proved to be a stepping-stone in which he learnt to hone his skills, perfect his performing capabilities, and build his always-growing confidence as a performer.

With that as a basis, he decided to come out with Magical Ztudio the Magic Supplying Company; this move stunned many, as it was not expected. Magical Ztudio brought upon a lot of heavy criticism, criticisms that surface were about age, experience, and capability in competing and providing the necessary results from which Magical Ztudio was expected to do. Well that aside now, Magical Ztudio is no longer in operation.
No matter what obstacles that faced him, the love for Art of Magic has never left his heart.

He specializes in the field of stage mentalism, and close-up magic. With his ever-growing ‘Chris Humor’ and calm personality, he creates a unique combination of mentalism and magic that leaves a distinct memory in people’s lives.

Knowing when to make people laugh, creating the perfect setting for the event, making it memorable, these are just a few of the things that he creates when performing. Magic makes the difference in every soul; the difference is there to see. After all most things are beyond beliefs until you experience it for yourself.

He have met and performed for over 1000 of government and corporates leaders,minister and many famous artist and reknown people. Have spoken and made special appearances in countless of forums and seminar.
